“The term granite refers to a group of related stones originating from the molten mantle deep within the earth. As this extremely hot material rises to the surface and cools, it develops a crystalline and granular structure—hence the name granite. Granite and similar stones are composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica crystals tightly interlocked to form an exceptionally hard material, ideal for kitchen countertops. Its polished surface resists household acids such as citrus and vinegar and is hard enough to withstand scratches from knives, pans, and other kitchen utensils.

Because granite forms under intense heat deep within the earth, it is resistant to etching from acids and to scratches or scrapes from everyday kitchen use. It is also impervious to heat sources commonly found in kitchens, such as hot pans or boiling liquids.

Granite is said to be honed when the polishing process is stopped just before achieving a reflective finish, giving the stone a soft, matte appearance. Some manufacturers may hone polished granite using specialized equipment to isolate the surface, although this process can sometimes leave subtle polishing marks.”
