As described by Prestale, a leader in the supply of granite countertops: “The term ‘granite’ refers to a group of related stones all coming from the molten mantle deep within the earth. As this extremely hot liquid material rises to the earth’s surface and cools, it develops a crystalline and granular structure hence the term granite. Granite and similar stones are composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica crystals that are tightly interlocked with each other to form a very hard stone ideal for kitchen countertops because its polish is resistant to household acids like citrus and vinegar and hard enough to resist scratches from knives, pans, and other kitchen utensils.

As granite is a very solid stone formed at very high temperatures deep within the earth, it is resistant to etching from household acids or scratches and scrapes caused by knives and other pots and pans. Granite is impervious to heat sources so common in kitchens like hot pans or the spilling of boiling liquids.

Granite is said to be ‘honed’ when the polishing process is interrupted just before achieving a reflective and shiny surface. This gives the stone a soft and matte appearance. Some manufacturers may hone polished granite provided they have special equipment that allows isolating the polished surface. However, this process can sometimes leave wheel marks from the action of the polisher.” Source: prestale.ca
